Quick Research and Findings About The Blood Donation Sector in Nigeria

  1. Only 10% of Nigerians donate blood voluntarily.

  2. Nigeria requires a minimum of 1.8 million units of blood annually to meet the blood transfusion need of its citizens. (World Health Organization).

  3. The majority of blood donations came from the families of patients, some of whom were not adequately screened for infections and other health conditions.

  4. Unfortunately, the country has one of the lowest voluntary blood donation rates globally.

  5. The demand for blood transfusion in Nigeria is high, as the country had one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally and the prevalence of diseases such as malaria which require blood transfusion.

The government has asked for up to 100 persons to come and donate *1 Unit of Blood Each* for victims of the building… it’s not about money, but this was yet another opportunity for *iDON8 to Save Lives*.

The Challenges

The Challenges

After research, we sketched ideas. We also had to redesign the interface as the old one was poorly designed.

Some of the challenges we came across were;

  1. Motivation to donate blood is low in Nigeria.

  2. There is little to no education about blood donation in Nigeria.

  3. Lives are lost as a result of the lack of willing blood donors and resources.

  4. Lack of resources for blood donation.

  5. Blood with the wrong match or infected blood is sometimes administered.

  6. Blood is administered without screening.

Onboarding

Onboarding

The onboarding process has been meticulously tailored to cater to emergencies, considering the high-pressure environment that accompanies such scenarios. Recognizing the sensitivity of health information and the potential life-or-death consequences of any inaccuracies, I implemented a three-stage data verification system that allows users to cross-check every piece of information they input.

By providing users with multiple opportunities to review and confirm their data, they are empowered to take full control of the information they provide. This not only enhances the overall reliability of the system but also instils confidence in users, knowing that their input has been thoroughly validated before being utilized for critical decision-making.

I understand that in emergencies, time is of the essence. However, I firmly believe that the extra time invested in the verification process is a worthwhile trade-off for the assurance and precision it brings. By encouraging users to meticulously review their entered data at each stage, I created a safety net that helps prevent potential mistakes, thereby safeguarding lives and maintaining the highest standards of care.

History and Blood Request Process

History and Blood Request Process

History and Blood Request Process

Users are provided with the valuable feature of accessing their donation and request history. This log list serves a crucial purpose by enabling users to identify and address any discrepancies that may arise in the future.

The onboarding process in iDon8 is designed to accommodate two primary types of users. In most cases, it involves either the person in need of blood or an authorized representative, such as a companion or a healthcare professional at the hospital. However, if the requester is not the individual requiring blood, their health information is unlikely to have been onboarded. Therefore, a separate onboarding process is necessary to capture the necessary details accurately. This ensures that all relevant information is available for an effective and efficient blood donation process.

Once a blood request has been submitted, iDon8 provides real-time information on the estimated distance and time required to reach the location. This feature helps both the requester and potential donors to stay informed and remain updated throughout the process. By displaying the distance and time, all parties involved can plan and coordinate their actions accordingly, minimizing any delays and maximizing the chances of a timely response.

In urgent situations, sharing the urgency status becomes crucial. iDon8 offers the functionality to communicate the urgency level in emergency cases. This feature allows requesters to indicate the criticality of the situation, enabling potential donors to gauge the immediacy of their response.

Viewing/Accepting Blood Donation Requests

Viewing/Accepting Blood Donation Requests

Viewing/Accepting Blood Donation Requests

To cater to the needs of donors, iDon8 features a well-designed requests tab that provides comprehensive information about the individuals they will be donating blood to. This tab ensures that only requests whose health data align with the donors' information are displayed.

The inclusion of the requests tab streamlines the donor experience, allowing them to seamlessly transition between different functions within the app. They can easily navigate from viewing request details to accepting or declining a specific request, all within a user-friendly interface.

Furthermore, iDon8 incorporates distinct tabs for accepted and pending requests, providing clear differentiation of the status of each request. The accepted tab displays requests that the donor has committed to, ensuring transparency and clarity regarding their ongoing contributions. On the other hand, the pending tab showcases requests that are awaiting the donor's response, allowing them to review and make informed decisions based on their availability and preferences.
